Drawing tutorial 031 - How to draw hair

Drawing hair at first look may look unchallenging that require no serious observation and practice. But in reality it is not so. To draw hair that looks convincing requires the knowledge of statics and dynamics of hair.
By statics we mean the volume of hair and how that volume covers the head along with flow or direction of hair flow. To know the dynamics means how the hair moves when head turns or there is wind blowing or the person is moving fast.

Hair being flexible can be given so many shapes. But lets first see how much of head it covers because the coverage has less variance.

Not all person have same volume of hair. Some have more hair on their head than other. This can be drawn by adjusting the hairline above the scalp. Also a dense and long hair will drop down from top of head over eyebrows or over the shoulders. Lets see the following illustrations.

Hairs can be long, short and having a hairdo that is so different than normal haircut. Also hair have have different textures. It is good idea to sketch out the volume of hair in a particular hair style. Drawing hair by hair is not suggested as we perceive the hair as a mass and not as individual hairs. Rendering individual hairs will make the drawing flat and rendering of shape and volume will be improper.

Lets see some of different hairdos that we see everyday

Some tips:

  • Hair volume always covers some area of head and some above scalp in a drawing.
  • Hair will converse to where there is a band holding the hair,
  • Hairs overlap, so better not to draw all parallel hairs. But that does not mean all should be criss -crossed.
