Drawing Tutorial 007 - Drawing a face looking up

Last week we have drawn a face looking down. Today we will draw a face looking up. The basis of the face as we have learnt in previous weeks lessons, is an oval tapering to the bottom. The final result we will be aiming is

1. We draw the base oval with bottom tapering. this time we are going to draw the eyeline little higher than the middle. This is because, when the face is tilted up, position of eye, nose and mouth goes up when seen with respect to the positions when the face is straight and looking horizontally.

 2. In step two, let us draw the eyeline, line indicating the base of nose and mouth. All these lines which are horizontal in case the face is not tilted, are now curved up in the middle. Also the forehead, the length of nose are squeezed in this angle. This is the effect of perspective which we may discuss in another tutorial. In a similar fashion to the eyeline, the jawline also curves up. This is particularly to be noted as this gives the peculiar shape to the face that makes it looking up along with other things.
3. Here we draw the contour of the face which is quite different from the face contour we generally observe when the face is straight. The following shape correction is to be noted -
- The temple area is squeezed a little and therefore the forehead area to hairline is narrower than usual.
- The check bone is more prominent than normal.
- the jaw does not come down but is horizontal and in our case even moves up.
- The ear position is lower than normal and follows the curved eyeline.
- The position of nose is moved up. The tip of nose touses or even crosses the eyeline. The shape of the nose is to be specially noted. We see bottom plane of nose.
- the face area is hatched by green line.

4. The plane below the chin that is not visible from front when head is VISIBLE when the head is tilted upwards. - Mouth is curved following the guidelines.

5. The eyes also follow the curved eyeline and are narrow. A finer drawing will show the bottom plane of upper eyelid.

6. Finally we add some shadows to suggest the planes and volume.
