Drawing Tutorial 016 - Drawing a human nose

Last week we have drawn eyes step by step with shading. This week we shall draw a nose in fron tview and break down its anatomy.

1. The nose shape can be considered as a ridge. But top of the nose's ridge is not sharp. its a bit flat. We can draw a rectangle to form the basic shape. The sides of the nose can be imagined as flat surfaces.Height of nose ridge is more towards the tip of nose.

2. The ala and apex(the tip of nose and the sides of nasal path) are fleshy sphere shaped part. Lets draw them one by one. The apex shall be straight down the nose's ridge(remember we are drawing in front view).

3. The sphere will curve little upwards and then again the ala (wings of the nose) will be two small spherical shapes.

4. The tip of the nose being larger spherical than the wings, there will always be a softened crease between these spheres. Since they are not hard creases, they shall not be very dark, but there will be  darker tones compared to other areas.

5. Lets clean us the guidelines and we have the basic nose shape in front view.if head is straight and not drooping down, we can see the nasal cavity slightly. Those are below the wings.

6. The side plains will catch lesser light, if light is falling on the nose from front. In other lighting conditions, the tonal value will differ. Here light is slightly from right. The bottom side of the spheres will catch less light and therefore be darker. But due to reflected light, a thin band will be lighter.

 7. As the nose's ridge is not uniform we added the tones with a bit of non-uniformity. This makes the drawing attractive.
